Board of Directors Adds Three New Members

The North Suburban Center for the Arts welcomes three new members to its Board of Directors: Josh Bindewald, Rachel Gonzalez, and Kim Malakowsky. Together they bring decades of studio practice, gallery management, and nonprofit administration experience to the organization as it enters an exciting new chapter.

We asked them a few questions about themselves and what they are looking forward to as newly minted members of the NSCA team. Read below to learn more!

Josh Bindewald

Josh Bindewald has served as the Director of Artist Programs at Highpoint Center for Printmaking, a nonprofit organization in Minneapolis, since 2012. He holds a Master of Fine Arts in Printmaking from Bradley University, in addition to his undergraduate work at University of Wisconsin-Stout. Bindewald is an active artist, exhibiting and collected both locally and nationwide.

What makes you excited to get involved with the NSCA?

Having recently emerged from some serious challenges and uncertainty, It's an exciting time for the NSCA. Based on the dedication and investment I've already seen from staff and the pre-existing board, as well as the impressive NSCA facility, I am extremely confident about the future of the organization. It will be whatever we choose to make it!

Tell us a fun fact about you!

I have a lot of hobbies, cooking is not one of them. I absolutely love dogs and in many cases find them easier to interact with than people. In my 43 years I've never been abroad, but in October that will change when I go to Italy.

Check out one of Josh’s most recent works below, an intaglio print featuring his first dog Maleah along with a sweet photo of his pup, Ester!

Rachel Gonzalez

Rachel Gonzalez has worked in nonprofit organizations for the past ten years, primarily museums including the Science Museum of Minnesota, the Field Museum, the Kelvingrove, the Glasgow Science Centre, and the Isabella Stewart Gardener Museum. In addition, Gonzalez has made numerous exhibits for both national and international clients. She holds a Master of Sciences from the University of Glasgow, in addition to an undergraduate degree from Loyola University Chicago. Currently, Gonzalez serves as the Marketing and Communications Associate for the Saint Paul & Minnesota Foundation. She is also an illustrator and enjoys spending time cuddling with her two cats, Alba and Nev.

What makes you excited to get involved with the NSCA?

I’m so excited to spread the NSCA’s mission and increase community engagement and outreach as well as contribute to our robust programming! I have experience in educational programming, event planning, marketing and communications, grant writing, and project management, so I hope to bring a little bit of everything to the NSCA board!

Tell us a fun fact about you!

I negotiated and secured a Cretaceous sea monster fossil (a mosasaur called Taniwhasaurus) from Argentinian paleontologists and lawyers for an exhibit I worked on for the Field Museum in Chicago, IL—all in Spanish and over email or the occasional phone call! It was one of the hardest but most rewarding things I’ve done, and I learned a lot of scientific and legal Spanish vocabulary in the process.

Kim Malakowsky

Kim Malakowsky brings experience from the the worlds of magazine publishing, including ten years at the Publication Services of America, and international nonprofits. With a strong skillset for fundraising and marketing, her work has provided vast opportunities for travel and engaging with people from all walks of life. Malakowsky has been an avid supporter and participant in the arts for many years.

What makes you excited to get involved with the NSCA?

I’m particularly excited to be involved with NSCA because I’m passionate about all things creative and also due to the experiences I’ve had in helping to revive and grow a business which has been faced with adversities.

Tell us a fun fact about you!

I used to hate being the tiniest one in my class… until I discovered gymnastics and later realized I could stretch out my legs on an airplane while others struggled to fit in the seat.
